“One Man’s Opinion” by Gordon Curvey
I was on the net looking for good stories for the THOUSANDS of visitors we are obtaining here on “Music Inner City News Magazine” and BAM! I found this story that made me very very happy!!
If you did not know and a lot of people don’t follow this kind of story but I thought I would bring it up here on my blog. And that is Miss America (Nia Franklin), Miss USA (Cheslie Kryst) and Miss Teen USA (Kaliegh Garris) are all African American young ladies! WOW!
Miss USA Cheslie Kryst who is also a lawyer recently told CBS This Morning” that there is much more work to be done when it comes to diversity.
She went on to say “I think it’s a reminder of how far we have to go. I believe when Ursula Burns was no longer the CEO of Xerox there were no more black female CEOs of Fortune 500 companies. And that is an unfortunate statistic to know.”
Nia Franklin added that the wins were “symbolic,” saying they send a message across the world. really, that you can be anything you want to be and there doesn’t have to be just one of us at a time up here and and I think it showcases diversity as well.”
Thomas DeFrantz, a professor in the Department Of African And African American Studies at Duke University recently said “The three young women who have focused their energy on demonstrating how standards of black beauty speak for American standards of beauty are to be commended. These three standard bearers prove that black beauty is at the heart of a 21st century American ideal.”
Check this out readers. Miss Franklin who is from New York, won her title in September in Atlantic City, New Jersey, becoming the FIRST lady to win the title without having to wear a swimsuit!
And Garris who is from New Haven, Connecticut, won her crown in April, and she wants to become a trauma nurse. And Miss Kryst, a former Division 1 Athlete and like I said earlier a lawyer at Poyner Spruill LLP in Charlotte, North Carolina, won her title in Reno, Nevada. She holds an MBA from Wake Forest University. These ladies are tremendous role models for young black girls everywhere!
Also the oldest of the three pageants, Miss America which started in 1921 barred ladies of color to be involved in competing for the crown until the 1940s. A rule said all contestants must be of “the white race.” Frustration led to the creation of the Miss Black America contest.
And in 1970, Cheryl Browne became the first African American lady to participate in the Miss America pageant. So readers since then, more than a dozen African American females have been named either Miss America or Miss USA, and that includes the FIRST ever black Miss America, the still beautiful Vanessa Williams who won in 1983.
Finally, the Miss USA contest was created in 1952 and crowned the first African American contestant, Carole Anne Marie Gist in 1990. Just a year later, Janel Bishop won the Miss Teen USA title becoming the first African American winner.
It makes me very happy to know that these three talented, intelligent and proud black young ladies are holding the crowns of Miss Teen USA, Miss America and Miss USA AT THE SAME TIME!! It puts a huge smile on my face. I think this is just great ladies and gentlemen.
